Reasons Your Home Is Not More Environmentally Friendly

Thursday, April 30, 2020

If you are aware of the need to live more ecologically, and you want to know how to approach it, it is a good idea to start with the home. That is probably where you spend most of your time, especially at the moment, and it is therefore where you can certainly make most of a difference. But most people do not have environmentally friendly homes, and for that reason, you might need to look into what you can change here in order to make yours more so. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the possible and most common reasons why your home might not be as environmentally friendly as it could be. If you focus on these things first and foremost, you could make a huge difference.

You Use Too Much Water

Most of us use too much water. It is too easy to do. For one thing, you probably find that you tend to shower for too long, or that you water the garden more than necessary. These little things can add up to make a huge difference, and they are the kinds of things that you really need to keep an eye on if you want to become more environmentally friendly at home. You can do this simply by looking consciously at how much water you are using and where and then taking steps to reduce it. If you do that, you will hopefully find that you can use much less water in no time.

Your Home Isn’t Insulated

Having your home insulated is one of the top things that you need to do if you want it to be eco-friendly. If it is not insulated, you are going to struggle to make sure that your home is as environmentally friendly as you would hope, as you will expend energy in trying to keep the home warm. There are plenty of kinds of insulation you can look into, but it’s best to have it done by a professional in any case. Whether you want to use up the crawl space for this purpose or simply get the usual attic insulation, you will be able to make your home much more eco in this way, so it’s something to think about.

The Wrong Appliance Settings

It’s also a good idea to take a look at your appliance settings to see whether you are leaking or wasting energy that way. If you tend to just not really think about the settings too much, then there is a good chance that you are using far more energy than you really need to. Washing a load of clothing shouldn’t take too much energy, so you should keep the setting as low as possible. Similarly, you might want to look at the setting you use on the dryer - or better yet, don’t use a dryer at all, and just allow your clothes to dry on a rail. You will be making a big difference this way.
