Office plants That Are Difficult To Kill

Sunday, August 25, 2013

No plants are indestructible; however, there are a very tough few who can withstand anything you throw at them. These are six of the most difficult office plants to kill.

Considering most of us spend so much of our daily working hours indoors, the quality of the air is important. Because plants naturally filter out harmful chemicals and toxins, what better way to do this than by getting office plant?
I’m certain that when you have a boss moaning in your ear and a million deadlines to meet, the last thing you want to be worried about is that precious little office plant which needs to be looked after. So for those of you who want tough plants that welcome negligence and inattention from their owner, then you have come to the right place.

Snake Plant

This plant can survive in just about any light, so it does not need any looking after at all. It only needs to be watered every two weeks and in winter you only have to do it every month.
These also come in different varieties, including leaves with white and yellow edges to add a bit of colour to your life. Small white flowers do grow at the base of the plant which is always an added bonus from a plant that you hardly ever need to look after.

Jade Plant

If you’ve never had an office plant before then this is the perfect plant for beginners as it tolerates normal room conditions and is very easy to manage. Originating from South Africa, this plant has lovely spoon shaped leaves which are bound to get a few second looks of appreciation from your co-workers.
It is slow-growing, so you don’t need to be worried about managing it or the plant getting out of hand. All you need to do is to place it in a slightly bright location and water it every 10-20 days. They only need fertiliser once a month which saves you from doing any of the hard work.

ZZ Plant

Originating from East Africa, its full name is Zamioculcas zamiifolia and it is really as tough as its name sounds. This plant is the ultimate office plant dream and lives up to all expectations. It has sturdy, thick stems which have bright dark green leaves and will brighten up any dim corner of your office.

It tolerates low light, and rarely needs to be watered and fertilised. What more do you need? If you’re really bored at work, you could get this and the cactus (see below) and see which plants prosper on the most neglect.

Heartleaf Philodendron
Also known as the Sweetheart Plant, having the Heartleaf in your office is going to cheer you up on the gloomiest of days. It gets its name from the very aesthetically pleasing heart shape and bright green leaves. This makes it perfect for those of you who don’t want an evil looking plant in your office.

It is tolerant of dry air, only needs a bit of sunlight and just needs the occasional watering every week.

Spider or Airplane Plant
Much like the Jade plant, this plant is also very useful for beginners and it requires the least attention possible. These should be kept out of direct sunlight and only needs to watered occasionally.

Though it requires to be fertilised more often than any of the other plants on this list, this does not undermine its tough and sturdy nature. With its thin green leaves and an appealing white outline, these are perfect to go in reception areas.

Cactus
If you have every plant there is on this list and all of them have disappointed you by constantly craving your attention, then it is time to turn to the Cactus.

This is the infamous desert plant that can survive the harshest of conditions. It has the ability to store nutrients and water which makes it an ideal office plant. It requires minimal attention as the only thing you need to provide it with is sunlight and nothing else. What more do you want?

Decorating your office with these hard to kill plants is only going to give you the healthiest of working spaces.
Out of all these plants, which are your favourites? Have you managed to kill any of them?
