If you’ve been pretty passive about your home décor in the past, and now you’re getting more and more interested in the whole art, then you may be pretty excited by the whole concept of giving your place a makeover. However, it’s important not to let it go to your head, and rush in without thinking things through. Here are some of the most common home décor mistakes made by newbies…

Bad Budgeting

Just like any big project that involves spending money, a big home makeover needs to start with a smart budget. Knowing how much money you can practically spend on your interior will help you make those tough decisions later in the process. Furthermore, you don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you’ve spent way too much on things to make your home beautiful, and haven’t left enough for the things you really need. This is usually a big problem when people first move into a home. Yes, that lamp might mesh beautifully with the colour of the walls, but if you’ve forgotten about those Vivint Sky costs you could go a long while with no kind of home security! Take your time with the budgeting process, and make sure you don’t shoot yourself in the foot!

Buying Furniture That Doesn’t Fit

Furniture showrooms, as I’m sure you know from experience, are massive. In such a big, open space, it can often be pretty hard to judge the scale of any piece of furniture relative to where you’re thinking of putting it in your home. This is why it’s common for homeowners to bring a piece of furniture home, and get a big shock when it appears to dominate an entire room. Before you go out and start falling in love with coffee tables, it’s important to measure the space you have available, and take a note of those numbers. Take the measurements with you on your shopping trips, and stick to their limitations whenever you’re buying anything. This will stop your eyes from playing tricks on you in the showroom, and could potentially save you from losing a lot of money!

Being Taken in by Sets

Another common mistake among amateur decorators is visiting a single store, going crazy for a single piece of furniture, and then making an impulse decision to purchase the whole set. Bedroom suites are a pretty common culprit, as are sofas with matching love seats. Okay, there’s a reason that these items are placed together in “sets”, and they’ll probably look pretty appealing together in your home. However, there’s a certain degree of danger with these too. If you’re taken in by furniture sets, you can end up blowing most of your budget on them, and then later see a piece which suits the room even better than what you’ve brought home. Take your time with every decision to avoid these frustrating and limiting mishaps!

As you dive right into your interior décor project, make sure you’re avoiding these newbie mistakes!
