Passion To Career: Are You A Chef In The Making?

Friday, September 02, 2016

You LOVE food, right? I mean, really love it. You enjoy nothing more than getting home after a long day of work and cooking an amazing meal. Your friends love coming round to sample what you make. Your family relies on you to keep them fed with your incredible talents.

If all of these statements are true, then why aren’t you a chef already?!

It might be because you don’t feel you’re capable. You might think that you’re not the type of person that can be a great chef. We’re going to try and help you to decide whether it’s the right career path for you. Here are some traits that every great chef needs to have.

Passion

This is the part that you’ve surely got in spades, right?! Whatever type of cooking you like to do, as long as you’ve got the passion for it, you can succeed. Maybe you want to do something niche, like baking cakes? You can find classes and get a career doing that if you want to. Maybe you’re an adamant vegan with no interest in meat? There are vegan cooking classes that can get you on your way. As long as you’re passionate about something, you can turn it into a career.

Patience

The life of a chef is a hectic one. When the kitchen is particularly busy, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. It’s your job to stay patient, and if you can’t do that, you’re going to get overly stressed. Those people out there need their food, and you need to get it to them quickly. If you don’t feel you’re equipped to do that, this job might not be for you.

The Ability To Multitask

If you go into a career like this, you better believe that you’ll be responsible for many different things at once. Not only do you need to multitask quickly, but you need to it effectively with an intense focus on quality. If you’re the sort of person that needs to focus on one thing at a time, you might run into some problems.

Stamina

You haven’t got the luxury of being able to sit down all too often when you’re doing this. You need to be physically fit, and able to put enough stamina into the role in order to succeed. The benefit? It’s a darn good workout! The downside? You’ll find it tough. But hey, anything that’s worth doing is going to be difficult, right?!

Teamwork Abilities

This is one that you cannot underestimate under any circumstances. If you’re unable to work with others, you’re not going to be a successful chef. Everyone in the kitchen is a valued team member, and you must all pull your weight if you want to succeed. Never forget this, and brush up on your teamwork skills if you need to.

For those who love cooking, a career path as a chef seems like a no-brainer. There are considerations you need to make, though. Ultimately, only you know whether this would be an ideal choice for you.
